“It Is Time” Citizenship Workshop comes to Charlotte

On Saturday, September 19, 2009, the Human Rights Campaign, along with other community partners, participated in the “Ya Es Hora: ¡Ciudadanía!” (It Is Time: Citizenship!) campaign in Charlotte.

HRC volunteers Ron Sperry, Francisco Chavez, Justin and Jay Fullenwider were in attendance for a free workshop, organized by the Latin American Coalition, International House, the Mecklenburg County Bar and the Charlotte School of Law.  The workshop included an in-depth presentation on the subject of naturalization to U.S. citizenship, delivered by a local immigration attorney.  Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in a general question and answer session as well as individual screening sessions with volunteer attorneys that offered assistance with preparation of the required application.

“This was a great opportunity to partner with other non-LGBT organizations in Charlotte such as the Latin American Coalition,” said North Carolina HRC Governor Scott Bishop. “We were able to lend a hand, be supportive and most importantly, be visible to other members of the Charlotte community.  I look forward to volunteering for their next workshop – it was an important cause.”
